George Degiorgio, Jamie Vella, Adrian Agius, and Robert Agius have all been found guilty in relation to charges on the murders of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and lawyer Carmelo Chircop.
Submissions on sentencing will take place before Judge Edwina Grima, who presided over the trial, on Tuesday at 11am.
Robert Agius and Jamie Vella were both found guilty of complicity in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017 and they also both found guilty of complicity in the explosion that caused the journalist’s death with a majority of 8 jurors to 1.
The jury found Jamie Vella and George Degiorgio guilty of the murder of Carmel Chircop in 2015 with a 7-2 majority. Adrian Agius was found guilty of complicity in the murder of the lawyer with a 7-2 majority, but his brother Robert Agius was found not guilty with a 6-3 majority in his favour.
George Degiorgio and Jamie Vella were also found guilty of possession of a firearm without a licence during the commission of Chircop’s murder.
After the decision was read out George Degiorgio, who is already serving a prison sentence for being one of the three hitmen to carry out the murder of Caruana Galizia, shouted out in the courtroom: “I'll tell you where I got the bomb from […] You’ve made a bad mistake.” It’s not clear who he shouted this too.
The jury of five men and four women spent nine hours deliberating after a six-week trial which saw 157 witnesses testifying.
The prosecution's case was built largely on the testimony of Vincent Muscat, known as "il-Koħħu", a self-confessed hitman who struck a deal with the state in 2021. Muscat, in return for a reduced sentence and presidential pardon, provided detailed testimony that tied the accused to both crimes.
The defence mounted an aggressive challenge against the validity of Muscat’s presidential pardon, arguing it was politically motivated and unjustly prejudiced the case.
Prosecutors Godwin Cini, Danika Vella and Anthony Vella are representing the Attorney General’s office.
Defence lawyer Nicholas Mifsud is appearing for Adrian Agius, Ishmael Psaila and Amadeus Cachia for Jamie Vella, Alfred Abela and Rene Darmanin representing Robert Agius, and Noel Bianco and Leslie Cuschieri for George Degiorgio.
Jason Azzopardi and Therese Comodini Cachia are assisting the Caruana Galizia family, while Vince Galea is assisting the Chircop family.
At the end of the sitting, the jurors were thanks for their services and are now exempted from jury service for life.
