A new sectoral agreement has been signed for the Armed Forces of Malta, meaning that the AFM salary fund will now reach an investment of €68 million, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) stated.
The OPM referred to the new agreement as "the best sectoral agreement for soldiers of the Armed Forces of Malta", continuing that the agreement builds on its predecessor and was signed with the General Workers' Union as representatives of the AFM workers. The OPM stated that the agreement will provide strong increases and improve the conditions of around 1,800 officials.
Prime Minister Robert Abela described the agreement as another investment in a category of workers. The OPM said that this category of workers refers to those in Public Administration who also benefited from the Public Administration collective agreement signed towards the end of 2024. The Prime Minister said that from the beginning of May and until the end of June, the government will have signed no less than eleven agreements whereby it will provide increases and improvements in the working conditions of Public Administration workers. Abela said that the government has the desire to sign such agreements because it is financially sound, stable, and able to distribute wealth and invest in its workers.
He continued that the government's economic direction is one with an emphasis on quality, adding that quality of life is what Malta Vision 2050 speaks on. The Prime Minister said that Malta Vision 2050 puts workers and families at the centre of everything the government does so that the country continues to move forward. Continuing on that point, he said that the government, therefore, cannot fail to invest in those who are always there when the country calls them, referring to workers such as the officials of the AFM. Prime Minister Abela remarked that the country is grateful to the soldiers, and he encouraged them to continue working for Malta.
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said that a secure Malta and better conditions as well as enhanced rights for workers are not just buzzwords, but are priorities that the government works towards every day. The OPM said that the security of the country and investment in workers who give their lives for this purpose must go hand in hand. Camilleri added that the government will remain shoulder-to-shoulder with all disciplined forces, not only with more investment but also by continuing to reward diligence.
Commander-in-Chief of the AFM, Brigadier Clinton J O'Neill, said that this agreement will lead to further strengthening the service provided. He commented that it is an agreement which reflects how the disciplined forces are continuing to renew, strengthen, and evolve.
