Outgoing Opposition Leader Bernard Grech slammed the government's actions over proposed controversial planning reforms during a brief interview on NET TV on Sunday, saying that it is evident that "this is a government that is compromised."
"Compromised because it made many agreements with strong ppl in the country." He said that the government takes from normal citizens to give more to the strongest. "That is the state of the supposedly socialist party," he said, adding that it does not fight for the everyday citizens, but for the "big."
He said that with these bills, the Prime Minister wants decisions taken not to be challenged. He said Abela wants that, "once they pass the planning authority, where the government has control, then nobody can challenge them, for the court not to have power over them. That is what the Prime Minister wants to do."
He said Abela recently removed the right for people to open magisterial inquiries. He described Abela as a Prime Minister "who attacks the judiciary. A PM who controls the police commissioner so he doesn't charge those who stole from us. A PM who controls the Attorney General and the State Advocate not to open the case to bring back the €400 million stolen," Grech said.
He said that Parliament spent time closing an hour early, and the government had even, on two days, decided not to open Parliament. But now, "since he wants to pass this law with least resistance, wants to move them in the days when most people are either abroad or resting, he does as he wants."
Everyone is angry over these bills, Grech said.
"With his law, the Prime Minister wants to break your quality of life. We will continue opposing this government and asking questions. If there need to be amendments in planning laws then let's hold a serious public consultation."
He said that any changes should be made following consultation and study, "but not rushed in these summer hours at a time when parliament is normally closed."
Regarding the law passed by Parliament ending the golden passport scheme, he said that for the PN it is important that because citizenship has value, it only be given to those who merit and deserve it.
"We were clear to Abela, for us there could be no sale of citizenship."
On the appointment of Acting President Helena Dalli, he said that a year and a half ago, "after months of chasing the Prime Minister to agree on a president, we met around a table a number of times and agreed on appointment of Myriam Spiteri Debono, and we voted in favour of her appointment and also agreed that the acting president come from the opposition. We agreed on Francis Zammit Dimech."
"After Zammit Dimech passed away, instead of honouring what we agreed and finding someone from the PN, Abela decided on his own, without any consultation. First he told the media that they will appoint Helena dalli, then a few hours later I received a letter informing me that he will appoint Helena dalli, as though that is consultation."
"I made clear we will not accept that the acting president be someone coming from cabinet of joseph muscat, who were collectively found responsible for the climate of impunity that led to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia."
"Since Helena Dalli was not good for us to be president, although he never mentioned her, in the same way she isn't acceptable as acting president. The President must be symbol of unity not division."
