Where are we heading as a country? What direction do we want to take? These are the questions we should be asking ourselves—and more importantly, our politicians. Leadership is not only about power; it’s about service. And the first priority of those in power should be to take care of the most vulnerable in our society.

Too many of our elderly are struggling to survive on a pension that barely lasts till the end of the month. These are the people who worked all their lives, contributed to the nation, and now find themselves forced to rely on their families just to make ends meet. Is this the kind of dignity we promised them?

We also need serious solutions to the ever-rising cost of living. Rent prices are becoming unaffordable for many, basic groceries continue to increase in price, and wages are not keeping up. Meanwhile, the people continue to pay taxes and expect these to be used wisely—to create a fair, balanced, and liveable society.

Another urgent issue is overpopulation. Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The rapid increase in residents—many of whom are foreign workers—has put immense pressure on infrastructure, public services, and community life. While we support diversity and economic growth, it must not come at the expense of our quality of life or the well-being of our people.

As a nation, we must ask more from those in charge. We must demand leadership that listens, acts, and puts the people first—especially the ones who need help the most.
