A video published by Moviment Graffitti on Tuesday showed the state of Comino's Blue Lagoon on a daily basis.

It depicts large commercial boats dropping of hundreds and hundreds of people into this tiny bay. The result, people packed like sardines in a small area.

Earlier this year, the government said it was introducing a booking system to allow a limited number of people at a given time. The new booking system, it said, allowed for a maximum of 4,000 visitors at Blue Lagoon at any one time, and three timeslots were announced 08:00-13:00, 13:30-17:30, 18:00-22:00. It has been given its chance, but it clearly has not worked to solve the issues.

There are still, very clearly, too many people at the bay at any one time. It is unsustainable.

People are attracted to Blue Lagoon due to the idea of this picturesque bay so many see in images on social media. But the reality is far different. People practically piled onto each other. It ruins the experience for visitors. Not only, but many Maltese are put off from going to visit what is meant to be one of the most picturesque sites on the Maltese islands because they know that it would be overcrowded.

How is that fair for Maltese families? How is that fair to the tourists who themselves want to experience the Blue Lagoon they expected to see?

"The environmental impact is massive, and by mid-afternoon nobody is able to enjoy the area for what it should be - a little piece of paradise," Moviment Graffitti said. It added that more than 10 large boats can be berthed at the Blue Lagoon at any one time, each with a capacity of several hundred people. "Many operators carry out multiple trips per day," Moviment Graffitti said.

The government has still not yet published the carrying capacity study for Comino. This needs to be published urgently.

Blue Lagoon, at the end of the day, is part of the Comino Natura 2000 site. The environment there must be protected. Yet we can only imagine what kind of potential damage this massive amount of footfall on a daily basis is having.

It is clear that more restrictions on Blue Lagoon are needed. 4,000 at any one time is, as clearly seen in the video, way, way too much. It is another example of overtourism.

Ironically, while it is one of the islands big selling points in terms of tourism, by not tackling the overcrowding problem at the site it could result in having a negative impact on tourism later on down the line. People do not want to take a boat trip just to spend the day in an overcrowded spot.

It is also clear that the bay has been overcommercialised. Here we are talking about the amount of kiosks.

Blue Lagoon is a jewel that belongs to all the people of Malta and Gozo. Yet it cannot really be enjoyed due to overcrowding.
