Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett on Thursday announced a major regeneration project in Marsaxlokk, with a total investment exceeding €8 million. The initiative includes the complete redevelopment of the Marsaxlokk Aquatic Sports Club, the extension of the sandy beach at Għar Aħmar, and the reconstruction of the surrounding road infrastructure, the ministry said.

At the heart of the project is the full reconstruction of the Marsaxlokk Aquatic Sports Club. The existing structure will be demolished and replaced with a new, modern sports and community complex. The facility will feature a swimming pool suitable for training and water polo matches, a smaller recreational pool, a gym, a fitness centre, and athletes' facilities.

The project also involves the extension and regeneration of the sandy beach in the well-known Għar Aħmar area. The beach will be extended by approximately 15 metres towards the lower side, offering more space and a safer environment for swimmers and families. The process will use natural sand sourced from Marsaxlokk's inner bay. To protect the new area from natural elements, a new berm made of natural stone will be built to withstand waves and currents.

Minister Bonett emphasised that this investment reflects the government's broader vision for infrastructure that goes beyond roads. "Infrastructure doesn't just mean new roads-it also means spaces that serve our society and our communities," the minister said. "This project in Marsaxlokk, like those in Msida, Marsaskala, and Buġibba, confirms our commitment to regenerating central areas within localities to create better spaces where people can meet and spend time in a safer, more beautiful environment."

Infrastructure Malta's Chief Executive Officer, Steve Ellul, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project. "Projects like this require vision, planning, and above all, collaboration," he said, thanking the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Infrastructure Malta's team, the Marsaxlokk Local Council, the sporting community, and local residents for their contributions to shaping the project.
