The Ġustizzja għal Artna campaign is urging the public to contact their elected representatives and call on them to take a stand against the Government's proposed laws that would dismantle existing planning and environmental protections.

To make this easier, the campaign has made a pre-drafted email available, allowing citizens to remind Members of Parliament that their loyalty should lie with the people, not with developers, the campaigners said Thursday.

The email highlights the serious problems found in Bills 143 and 144 and in the three accompanying legal notices. These include the extensive and arbitrary powers that would be granted to the Planning Authority, the new obstacles that would restrict the right to appeal Planning Authority decisions, the removal of the Courts' power to strike down illegal permits, and a sweeping amnesty for environmental illegalities.

The letter calls on MPs to reject what it describes as "the structurally rotten reforms in Bills 143 and 144 and the accompanying legal notices," and urges them to "speak out in Parliament, in the media, on social platforms, in meetings, and in the streets."

It also warns: "Should you remain silent and complicit as these unjust reforms move forward, your message to the public will be clear: that you are using your elected position to favour developers and speculators who seek to erode the quality of life in the Maltese Islands for personal gain, at the expense of the public good."

The Ġustizzja għal Artna campaign also reminds the public of the protest taking place on Monday, 27 October, at 5.30pm. The march will start at the Law Courts and end outside Parliament, where people will have the opportunity to make their anger at this developers' coup heard directly by the MPs.
