In Malta, water is one of our most precious resources - and yet, paradoxically, one of the most wasted. For a country that sees limited rainfall and depends heavily on energy-intensive reverse osmosis plants for its potable water supply, we should be treating every drop as gold. Instead, we continue to allow enormous amounts of rainwater to go to waste, running off our streets, flooding our roads, and eventually ending up in the sea.
This waste is not just an environmental concern; it is a question of national responsibility. Water is life - an indispensable resource that sustains our people, our economy, and our environment. At the same time, the careless way we manage rainwater is creating havoc on our roads and urban areas every time the skies open. The irony could not be greater: we cry about droughts in summer, and yet fail to make use of the water that nature does give us in winter.
Malta's dependence on reverse osmosis plants is a technological success story, but it is also an expensive and energy-hungry one. Producing water this way consumes large amounts of electricity, making it a costly process both economically and environmentally. At the same time, perfectly good rainwater is lost to the sea because our infrastructure is designed to dispose of it, not collect it. This is a glaring contradiction that urgently needs to be addressed through smarter water management and better urban planning.
The situation is worsened by over-development and poor drainage planning. Concrete jungles have taken over much of our island, leaving little room for natural absorption. Where once water could seep into the ground, today it hits tarmac and building facades, rushing into streets and causing floods within minutes. Residents and motorists in areas like Msida, Birkirkara, and Qormi know this reality all too well - the sight of cars half-submerged in murky water has become all too familiar.
We have already seen this problem magnified in recent years, particularly after large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Marsa flyover. While these projects are meant to ease traffic congestion, they have inadvertently made flooding worse in some areas because rainwater has nowhere to go. The ongoing flyover works in Msida raise serious concerns that the same mistakes will be repeated. Msida has long been known for its flooding problems; without proper water management systems built into new developments, the situation could become even more dangerous.
Storm-water management is not glamorous, but it is crucial. We cannot keep expanding our roads and infrastructure without planning for where the rainwater will go. Nor can we continue treating rainwater as a nuisance to be drained away, rather than a resource to be harnessed.
There are solutions - and they are neither new nor impossible. Rainwater harvesting systems can be integrated into public buildings, private homes, and even large developments. Green spaces and permeable pavements can help water soak into the ground rather than flow into the streets. Underground reservoirs, once common in Maltese homes, should once again become standard practice. These are practical measures that, if implemented properly, would not only help reduce flooding but also provide an additional source of water for non-potable uses like irrigation and cleaning.
The choice is ours. We can continue on the current path, wasting precious water and flooding our roads with every storm, or we can take responsible action. Protecting water resources is not merely an environmental goal - it is an investment in our future, in our safety, and in our quality of life.
In a country where every drop matters, wasting water should be unthinkable. It's time to stop letting it wash away into the sea, along with our common sense.
