A car given to the Speaker of the House by a benefactor has been handed over to Mater Dei Hospital for the purpose of helping patients who require transport to attend their treatment, such as dialysis, the Office of the Speaker stated on Thursday.
The Speaker's Office said that a consultation took place between Speaker Anglu Farrugia and Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela, after which it was decided that the best use of this vehicle would be to offer assistance to those in need. It continued that it was therefore determined that the car would be dedicated to people receiving dialysis treatment or suffering from certain medical conditions which require regular car and special transport.
Abela said that the donation of the vehicle is a beautiful gesture which will help hundreds of patients to facilitate their journey to and from Mater Dei for their treatment.
Farrugia remarked that he was honoured to be participating in such a moment of service and solidarity, and described the situation as a gesture of love towards humanity and the common good.
Opposition MP and Health Spokesperson Stephen Spiteri said that this initiative will serve to concretely help dialysis patients. He also spoke of the importance of people being given every possible assistance to facilitate their journey to regular care.
