Leader of the Opposition and the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg today addressed the MedTech World Malta 2025 Summit, calling for a new national strategy that places Malta at the forefront of medical technology, digital health, and innovation-driven growth.
Speaking at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, Alex Borg described MedTech World as a remarkable Maltese success story that has evolved from a local start-up into a global platform linking scientists, healthcare professionals, and investors from around the world.
"What began as a Maltese idea has become an international force in healthcare innovation," Borg said. "It shows what Malta can achieve when we lead with courage and vision."
In his address, Borg emphasised that Malta urgently needs to shift towards a health system rooted in prevention, technology, and data-driven solutions.
"We must move from reaction to prevention," he said. "Our politics should focus on technologies that help citizens live healthier lives, detect illnesses earlier, and manage conditions more effectively. This is the foundation of a modern health system."
Alex Borg noted that the sector continues to attract an increasing number of start-ups, researchers, and investors, describing their presence at MedTech World as "proof that Malta can be a home for emerging science and breakthrough innovation".
The PN Leader highlighted the work of MedTech World CEO Dr Dylan Attard, praising him as a Maltese entrepreneur who transformed a local concept into a global movement reaching Europe, Dubai, Asia, and North America.
"Dylan's work proves that age does not define capability," Alex Borg said. "His leadership shows the power of ideas, determination, and belief. Malta should be proud of the innovation born on our shores."
He also referred to his recent collaboration with MedTech World in his role as Malta's representative within the World Mental Health Leaders Network, where he presented Malta's success story to the international stage.
Addressing the international investors present, Borg stressed that Malta offers a unique environment for innovation.
"Malta is small, but our ambitions are not," he said. "You will find talent, creativity, and modern infrastructure - a place ready to welcome groundbreaking ideas, research and investment."
He thanked the investors attending the conference, stating that without their support great ideas would never become global solutions.
While the speech included forward-looking proposals for Gozo - including its potential as a future hub for medical technology and digital health - Alex Borg made clear that this vision forms part of a broader national innovation strategy, not the starting point.
He noted recent discussions with the Gozo Business Chamber and young Gozitan tech entrepreneurs, emphasising the importance of connecting talent from across the country to international networks like MedTech World.
Alex Borg ended with an appeal to the younger generation: "Do not let anyone tell you that you are too young to lead or too inexperienced to dream. Look at the example of Maltese innovators who believed in an idea and made it global. That is the power of vision and determination."
In his closing remarks, the PN Leader reminded all stakeholders that technology must always serve the patient. "In every innovation, what matters most is the benefit to the end user. This sector deals with life and wellbeing. Let us keep our communities healthy, prevent disease, and ensure our hospitals work efficiently."
