Universal Cement Ltd: A story of long-term commitment, innovation, and responsibility

Universal Cement Ltd (UC Ltd.), a leading importer and distributor of cement in Malta, has always believed that doing things the right way may not be the easiest, but it is the most important.

In a competitive market, UC Ltd. has built an operation centred on technology, sustainability, and long-term thinking. While others cut costs, UC Ltd. invests in infrastructure that safeguards both efficiency and the environment.

A Closed-Loop System

UC Ltd. operates Malta's currently only fully enclosed cement handling system. Cement arrives via a purpose-built ship, is unloaded pneumatically into a sealed silo facility, and delivered inland with specialised truck silos. Cement is never exposed to the environment, reducing dust, spillages, and pollution.

Largest Storage Facility in Malta

The company recently expanded its port-side silo into the largest on the islands, securing supply for the construction sector while meeting strict environmental standards. It is also upgrading pneumatic loading infrastructure at one of Malta's busiest ports to further modernise the industry.

Leadership Through Responsibility

CEO Jeremy Busuttil explains:
"At UC Ltd., if you're going to do something, do it properly. We didn't invest in this infrastructure because it was easy, but because we care about our nation. Sustainability and responsibility should not be optional; they should be the standard."

An Uneven Playing Field

Open-air unloading remains common practice, a cheaper method that exposes cement to the environment and increases pollution risks. Though currently legal, UC Ltd. believes the industry must move toward higher standards, especially on an island where environmental impacts are immediately felt.

A Call for Progress

UC Ltd. is proud of its investments but insists more must be done. The company calls on regulators, partners, and customers to support sustainable methods.

As Mr Busuttil concludes: "We have invested at sea, at port, and on the road because we believe in the future of these islands. But we cannot do it alone. Cleaner, more responsible operations must become the norm, for today and for generations to come."
