Prime Minister Robert Abela on Monday visited the Gozo General Hospital, where a large-scale investment programme is currently underway to modernize and transform healthcare services on the island.

During the visit, Abela viewed major projects completed over the past two years, including the installation of a new MRI system, which has already carried out more than 11,000 scans, the government said in a statement.

This new MRI has significantly reduced national waiting times, as Maltese patients are also opting to receive the service in Gozo. This year the hospital also added a new CT scanner, a 3D mammography machine, new Bi-PAP and CPAP devices, as well as advanced medical equipment and a temporary hyperbaric chamber pending completion of the permanent one. These improvements reflect the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare in Gozo and delivering a more modern, integrated and patient-centred system.

Several projects are currently in progress at the hospital, including the renovation and expansion of the Cardio-Respiratory Department, the expansion of the Outpatients Department with nine new clinics, and the full modernization of the hospital laboratory. These investments will expand the hospital's capacity for prevention, early diagnosis and specialized treatment, the government said.

Another key project explained to the Prime Minister is the new helipad, which will improve response times for emergencies requiring immediate transfer to Mater Dei Hospital. The hospital will also have a designated drone landing zone, enabling chemotherapy and other sensitive medication to be delivered directly to Gozo without delays.

The Prime Minister, who was  accompanied by Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri and Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela, thanked the entire team at Gozo General Hospital and emphasized that all these investments have one clear goal: ensuring that Gozitans receive top-quality healthcare on their own island, without needing to travel to Malta for services now available locally. He also noted the addition of a dedicated ward for individuals who experience pregnancy loss-a significant improvement, as previously these patients were placed in rooms alongside new mothers.

"What we are seeing here today is the best example of a government that keeps its word and delivers. Gozo is receiving the largest investment in healthcare it has ever seen, with full respect for patient dignity and for the professionals who work here. Our aim is simple: that Gozitans receive the same level of care as people in Malta, but closer to home," Abela said.
