The government said it is advancing a large-scale road infrastructure programme in Gozo, including the reconstruction of 100 roads across the island. The aim is to reduce congestion in central Victoria and modernise key transport routes.

Prime Minister Robert Abela and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri reviewed progress on one of the largest projects: the reconstruction of the four-kilometre Marsalforn Road, a vital link between Rabat and Marsalforn.

Works include full replacement of underground utilities, new water and stormwater systems, improved lighting, and a new "new water" service for farmers. The project is being carried out with special care for environmentally sensitive areas and nearby archaeological sites, where historic remains linked to Marsalforn's early harbour were found.

The first completed section, the 500-metre Ġorġ Pisani bypass, is diverting vehicles away from Rabat's historic centre. It features a new bridge over Karawendi Valley, upgraded stormwater infrastructure and preservation of a historic barrier wall converted into a rainwater reservoir.

Additional upgrades will follow at key junctions, including the Capuchin Church area, where new pavements, green spaces and a safer public square will be created. Around 300 new indigenous trees will be planted along the route, while more than 200 existing trees will be preserved.
