Triq Għajn Dwieli was reopened to traffic on Friday afternoon, Minister responsible for cleaning Glenn Bedingfield said in a brief post on Facebook.

In a post on Friday afternoon, Bedingfield said that work was ongoing to reopen the tunnel, and he included a picture of Cleansing Department workers clearing rock debris from the mouth of the Triq Għajn Dwieli tunnel, which connects Paola to the Three Cities.

The tunnel was closed to traffic on Thursday after rocks fell owing to strong winds and bad weather that battered Malta throughout the day.

Police said that the closure was for safety reasons.

It reopened to traffic after around an hour of clearing debris, Bedingfield said.

The closure and damage came despite Infrastructure Malta spending €2.2 million to rehabilitate the tunnel between 2021 and 2022.  The work was to reinforce its structural integrity, upgrade amenities, and limit water ingress through the tunnel.
