The operation to control and extinguish the scrapyard fire in Garibaldi Street in Marsa last November cost an estimated €166,000, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri told Parliament.

The figure was provided in reply to a parliamentary question by Opposition MP Rebekah Borg, who asked for a breakdown of the total cost borne by the country, including human resources, material resources such as water, and operational disruptions linked to the emergency response.

In his written reply, Camilleri said that the Civil Protection Department's initial estimates indicate that the operation cost approximately €166,000.

The fire broke out at a scrapyard in Triq Garibaldi, Marsa, on 21 November 2025, prompting a major emergency response involving Civil Protection officers, firefighters, police and other authorities.

Thick black smoke from the blaze spread across parts of the Marsa and surrounding areas, raising serious air-quality and public health concerns.
