Rocco Commisso, president and owner of ACF Fiorentina, has died at the age of 76 after a prolonged period of medical treatment, the club announced in an official statement. His death has plunged the Florence-based club and the wider football community into mourning.
Born in Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, in Calabria, Commisso emigrated to the United States at the age of 12 to join his father. A lifelong football enthusiast, he built a successful business career before returning to the sport as an owner. In January 2017, he acquired a majority stake in the New York Cosmos, and on 6 June 2019 he officially completed the purchase of Fiorentina.
In a tribute, the Commisso family described him as a devoted husband, father and guide, noting his 50-year marriage to his wife Catherine and his close bond with his children. The club highlighted his deep affection for Fiorentina, the city of Florence and its supporters, as well as his constant presence at youth level and his commitment to the club's future.
Commisso worked until his final days, remaining actively involved in Mediacom and Fiorentina. Under his leadership, the club reached two Conference League finals and a Coppa Italia final. The Viola Park training centre, which bears his name, stands as a lasting legacy of his vision and dedication.
