The Prime Minister, Robert Abela, officially inaugurated the third and final phase of the Marsa Sports Complex, describing the project as confirmation of the government's ongoing investment in sport, athletes and their future.
The Marsa Sports Complex comprises three distinct phases: a gymnastics and multi-sport complex, the regeneration of the historic 1903 building, and the final phase consisting of a centre dedicated to weightlifting, squash, netball and fitness facilities. The total investment across all phases exceeds €16 million.
The complex includes three floors of sports and ancillary facilities designed to modern standards. The final phase includes new squash and netball courts, a dedicated weightlifting centre, and a high-level fitness centre developed through a public-private partnership.
Prime Minister Abela said the new facilities provide sports communities with a modern, professional and accessible environment that enhances training, competition and athlete development at all stages.
He noted that such investment will continue to place Malta on the international sporting map, pointing to the Youth Commonwealth Games, which Malta will host next year with participation from 74 countries. The facilities inaugurated at Marsa will be used during the Games, which he described as the largest sporting event ever held in Malta.
The Prime Minister said investment in sport forms part of a wider national vision that promotes better health, discipline, teamwork and community spirit. Through SportMalta, the government is developing infrastructure that meets both current and future needs. He also referred to other investments, including the Rabat Sports and Aquatic Pavilion in Gozo, and regeneration plans for Marsa and the Grand Harbour area, supported by a strong economy and the Malta Vision 2050.
Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima said that sustained investment in infrastructure, associations, clubs and direct financial assistance to athletes is raising the overall quality of sport in Malta. He noted that improved facilities are enabling Malta to host more international sporting events while offering better opportunities for athletes and the public.
SportMalta CEO Mark Cutajar said that facilities in Marsa, once in poor condition, have been transformed into high-level sports complexes that serve associations, clubs, international events and the wider community.
The inauguration also included a discussion with athletes from squash, netball and weightlifting, who shared their experiences on the importance of modern facilities, competitive preparation and the role of sport in young people's lives.
