The gale-force wind currently affecting the Maltese Islands is expected to start easing later this afternoon, the Meteorological Office said Tuesday. In fact, from around 6pm, wind speeds are forecast to decrease rapidly, becoming moderate by around 9pm. The wind will continue veering to the west-southwest and remain moderate to rather strong.

At present, depression Harry is located over the Gulf of Gabes and is expected to continue tracking northwards throughout the day, passing over northern Tunisia, the office said. This will result in a further decrease in wind strength, particularly overnight.

The red weather warning, the highest level issued by the Meteorological Office, has now been downgraded to an orange weather warning. The public is still strongly advised to avoid coastal areas and other locations most exposed to strong winds. The warning remains in force until 8pm this evening and may be renewed if conditions warrant.

In addition to the strong winds, today's weather is expected to remain predominantly cloudy, with periods of rain and suspended dust in the air.

Meanwhile, the strongest wind gust recorded over the past few hours was measured by the Meteorological Office shortly after 7am today, reaching a peak of 50 knots.

WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR THE COMING DAYS

Cloudy conditions are expected to persist over the coming days, with the possibility of isolated showers. Winds may briefly strengthen to rather strong or strong for a short period on Thursday.

Dust in suspension is expected to decrease during Wednesday, with air quality improving fully by Friday.
