Credibility in politics is earned not through promises, but through delivery. Over recent years, Malta has experienced a period of stability, growth, and social progress that stands out not only locally, but also in a challenging European and global context. At the heart of this progress lies a simple but powerful principle: what is promised must be implemented and where possible, exceeded.
The Labour Government has demonstrated that responsible leadership means taking decisions that protect people during uncertain times while continuing to invest in the country's future. This approach was clearly reflected in the most recent Budget, which introduced a record €9.3 billion investment package, the largest in Malta's history which aimed at strengthening the economy and improving the quality of life. Such investment is not an abstract figure; it directly supports families, workers, students, pensioners, and businesses across the country
Despite global shocks including the COVID-19 pandemic, international conflicts, rising inflation, and energy price volatility, Malta has remained economically resilient. Rather than passing external pressures onto households, the Government chose to act as a shield, particularly in energy pricing. While families across Europe faced dramatic increases in electricity, fuel, and gas bills, Maltese households continued to benefit from price stability which in my opinion, this is a decision that saved families thousands of euros and preserved social cohesion, limiting various other risks that could have evolved.
This strong economic performance has enabled meaningful tax reforms. Minimum-wage earners today pay no income tax, while thousands of middle-class families have benefited from substantial reductions. Many parents now pay no tax at all, ensuring more money remains in their pockets at a time when cost-of-living pressures are felt everywhere. These measures reflect a clear priority; rewarding work and supporting families who form the backbone of Maltese society.
Young people have also been placed at the centre of national policy. Students are now receiving a 15% increase in stipends, benefitting around 30,000 learners, while Gozitan students studying in Malta enjoy an even higher allowance. Beyond financial assistance, initiatives that promote physical and mental wellbeing, such as free gym memberships for young people, show a broader understanding of what it means to invest in the next generation.
Equally important is the government's commitment to pensioners. Over recent years, pensions have increased repeatedly, with all increases remaining tax-free. These policies have ensured that those who worked and contributed throughout their lives can retire with dignity and security. Social investment has reached historic levels, confirming that economic success is being shared, not concentrated.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Robert Abela, Malta has achieved record employment, one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, and sustained wage growth. Household savings have increased significantly, demonstrating confidence in the economy and providing families with greater financial security.
Crucially, Labour's vision goes beyond short-term gains but a continuous decisions based on opportunity cost, resulting to long-term results. Economic development is being balanced with long-term environmental and digital investment. Projects aimed at expanding green open spaces as depicted with the proposed Manuel Island and White rocks land, national parks, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure show a government planning not just for today, but for the decades ahead.
This is a model of governance rooted in responsibility, fairness, and ambition. A government that protects people in difficult times, supports them in their daily lives, and invests decisively in the future. In an era when trust in politics is often fragile, delivery matters more than ever and on delivery, the Labour Government's record speaks for itself.
