Family businesses: The next generation

Family businesses are the backbone of Malta's economy. They are the ones driving growth, creating jobs, and providing the resilience that keeps our country moving forward, even when global markets get tough. That's why, as a government, we remain committed to ensuring that businesses get the support they need to grow.

Family businesses are not just economic units; they are legacies. The mission of the Family Business office is to ensure these legacies endure through strong governance and next-generation leadership. The Family Business Act provides a framework that recognises the distinct nature of these enterprises, offering them the tools to professionalise.

To ensure stable succession and sustainable growth for family businesses, as part of this year's budget 2026, the government has extended existing benefit schemes, including the reduction of duty on intra-family transfers, governance and succession consultancy grants, next-generation training vouchers, and assistance for digitalisation and financing.  Through this, family businesses can plan for the long term and grow.  I really encourage you to look at the schemes available.

This mandate for continuity is what drives our agenda for the year ahead.

On 21 January 2026, we launched our year with the Family. Business. Future. Event. This flagship gathering brought together registered family businesses, those in the process of registration, corporate service providers, and key stakeholders to set the tone for a year dedicated to continuity, governance, and growth.

This ecosystem does not thrive in a vacuum. It requires political will and a government that understands that economic metrics like GDP are built on human stories.

I want to extend my gratitude to Minister Silvio Schembri for his work in this sector. It is thanks to his support that the Family Business Office has the legislative backing to offer these targeted incentives and to continue evolving our framework to meet the needs of modern families.

As we look toward 2026, our objectives are set. We want to see more businesses integrating our incentives into their long-term strategies. Family businesses have always been a source of resilience for Malta. It is our shared responsibility to ensure they remain a source of strength for the future.
