Umberto Bossi, the charismatic and often controversial founder of the Lega Nord, has passed away at the age of 84, Italian media report. He died at the Circolo Hospital in Varese, not far from where his journey began in 1941. Known to many simply as the Senatur, Bossi was a towering figure of Italy's Second Republic, transforming the political landscape with a mix of raw populist energy and a fierce devotion to northern autonomy.

His political rise started with the creation of the Lega Lombarda, which later expanded into the Lega Nord in 1989. Bossi became a voice for a segment of the Italian population that felt ignored by the central government in Rome.

Through his direct, provocative, and often colorful language, he built a mass movement centered on federalism and the protection of local identities. He was the architect of the concept of Padania, a symbolic northern macro-region for which he demanded fiscal independence and greater self-governance.

Throughout the 1990s, Bossi was a kingmaker in Italian politics. His alliance with Silvio Berlusconi helped forge the modern center-right coalition, and he served as the Minister for Institutional Reforms. However, his career took a dramatic turn in March 2004 when he suffered a severe stroke that left him with permanent physical impairments. Despite this, he remained a central figure in the party for years, even returning to government in 2008.

The twilight of his leadership was marked by both health struggles and internal turmoil. In 2012, following financial scandals that rocked the party, Bossi stepped down as leader, claiming he was the victim of a conspiracy by the very Roman establishment he had spent his life fighting.

This transition paved the way for the rise of Matteo Salvini and a new era for the movement. Even as his active role diminished, Bossi remained an enduring symbol for the party's historic base, a reminder of the era when the cry of the north first shook the foundations of Italian power.
