Religious leaders from across Europe are gathering in Croatia this week for the biannual conference of Major Superiors, organised under the auspices of UCESM. The meeting brings together representatives from numerous countries to reflect on the current realities and future direction of religious life in Europe. Among the participants are Fr Eric Cachia, President, and Fr Charles Malia, member of the executive committee, representing Malta.

The conference aims to foster dialogue, shared learning, and collaboration on key issues shaping religious communities today, particularly within the European context. Discussions focus on both emerging challenges and practical aspects concerning the governance and mission of UCESM.

Four principal thematic sessions are guiding the reflections

Safeguarding in religious communities: Fr Hans Zollner is leading a session on building a culture of safeguarding within religious communities, many of which are small and closely interconnected. He emphasizes accountability, prevention, and the creation of safe environments rooted in transparency and trust.

The digital world: Challenges and tensions: Fr Lluís Oviedo is addressing the impact of technology on religious life, exploring how digital culture shapes communication, identity, and community dynamics. The session highlights both the opportunities and tensions that arise as religious life engages with an increasingly digital society.

Youth culture and engagement: Claire Jonard is focusing on the urgent need to connect with younger generations. Discussions examine how religious communities can remain relevant, authentic, and attractive to young people while responding to their evolving expectations and cultural realities.

Interculturality in religious life: Fr Peter Claver Narh is addressing the growing diversity within religious communities. His session emphasizes intercultural dialogue as a strength, encouraging openness, mutual understanding, and the enrichment that comes from living and working across cultures.

The conference is further enriched by the presence of Sr Simona Brambilla, whose contribution underscores the importance of renewed vision and leadership in consecrated life.

Overall, the gathering reaffirms a shared commitment among European religious leaders to deepen reflection, strengthen collaboration, and respond proactively to contemporary challenges. The insights gained are contributing to shaping a more resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking religious life across Europe.
