As Malta approaches another general election, I find myself reflecting not only on the journey our country has taken over the past years, but also on my own political journey.
Having served for a decade as President of the Labour Party, I had the privilege of witnessing and contributing to a period of deep transformation. Those years were not merely about political organisation, but about renewal. Strengthening our structures, modernising the party, and implementing meaningful reforms, including a substantial revision of the party's statute to ensure it remains relevant, transparent and responsive to today's realities.
What I see today is a party that has registered very positive results when entrusted with the country's administration and better still, a party that has continued to evolve in its vision for Malta. A party that has matured in its outlook, broadened its appeal, and positioned itself as a national movement that speaks to all generations. This evolution is not accidental. It is the result of years of listening, learning and adapting.
The Labour Party's INT Malta campaign reflects precisely this. It is centred on people, their aspirations, and a shared vision for the future. It recognises that the progress achieved over the years was not the work of one individual or institution, but a collective effort. As the campaign message puts it, Malta's story is one built together, where "your dream is our project".
In a world marked by uncertainty and instability, Malta has stood out for its resilience. While other countries faced disruptions in energy, public finances and economic stability, Malta remained steady, protecting families and businesses through careful planning and responsible leadership. This stability was not coincidental, but the result of long-term decisions taken with foresight.
Today, this strong foundation allows us to look ahead with confidence. The proposals emerging from this campaign go beyond economic indicators, focusing on wellbeing, quality of life, and ensuring progress translates into real improvements in people's daily lives.
From measures supporting young people entering the workforce, to schemes that make home ownership more accessible, to stronger support for families and pensioners, the vision is clear: to be with people at every stage of their lives.
But beyond policy, what strikes me most in this campaign is the genuine connection among the people behind it.
The Labour Party is presenting a diverse and dynamic group of candidates. There is an encouraging influx of young individuals bringing fresh ideas, energy and ambition. At the same time, the candidate line up also includes successful ministers who have a proven track record and fully understand the responsibility of public service and bring with them valuable institutional knowledge. This balance between renewal and experience is one of the party's greatest strengths.
The Labour Youths Forum also deserves a mention. Now more active than ever, helping shape the party's future and its appeal to younger generations.
The Labour Party today is more open, more inclusive, and more representative than ever before. It is a party that continues to attract people from different walks of life, united by a common belief in progress, fairness and opportunity.
As I recently announced, I will not be contesting the upcoming election. This decision comes after years of service within the party, as a Member of Parliament since 2017, and as part of the Prime Minister Abela Cabinet since January 2020. It is a moment of transition on a personal level, but it does not diminish my commitment to the values and principles that have guided my political journey.
On the contrary, it reinforces my belief in the importance of renewal. Politics must always make space for new voices, new perspectives and a sense of continuous renewal. This is how institutions remain strong and relevant.
Looking ahead, the choice facing voters is not simply between parties, but between different visions for Malta's future. One that builds on stability, experience and a clear plan for continued progress.
The Labour Party has demonstrated that it can deliver stability in uncertain times, while continuing to innovate and adapt. It has shown that economic strength can go hand in hand with social progress. We have shown in concrete terms, that politics, at its best, is about improving people's lives.
The INT Malta campaign is not just about an election. It is about reaffirming a collective belief: that Malta's future is something we build together.
And that, ultimately, remains the Labour Party's greatest strength.
