The Maltese football community is mourning the loss of Antonio P. Briguglio, a highly respected former international referee who leaves behind an enduring legacy in the sport. He was 91.

Beginning his career in 1961, Briguglio quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the island's most prominent officials, characterized by his professionalism and deep knowledge of the game.

His exceptional standing led to a distinguished 16-year tenure on the FIFA and UEFA panels, during which he officiated at the highest levels of international and European football.

Even after concluding his active career on the pitch, he remained a vital figure in the sport by serving as a UEFA Referees' Observer, where he dedicated himself to mentoring and assessing the next generation of officials.

For many years he was also a football critic on TV stations.

In recognition of his decades of service to the sporting community, he was awarded the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika in 2022.
