Taking part in the 2026 International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) "Trafficking in Persons: Prevention and Mitigation" in the United States was a truly rewarding experience, both professionally and personally, and one that will greatly benefit my work within the Malta Police Force's Vulnerable Victims Unit.
The program brought together professionals from around the world involved in combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable victims. Throughout the visit, which saw me visiting four different cities (Washington D.C., Detroit, Orlando and Las Vegas) I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from U.S. law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, NGOs, healthcare professionals, and academic institutions who are actively involved in tackling trafficking and child exploitation.
One of the most valuable aspects of the program was learning about the victim-centred and trauma-informed approach adopted by many U.S. agencies. Discussions focused on prevention, online child exploitation, intelligence sharing, cyber investigations, survivor support, and the importance of strong cooperation between police, social services, schools, healthcare providers, and the hospitality industry.
The program also provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with participants from several different countries, creating valuable international connections and perspectives on how trafficking is being tackled globally.
Alongside the professional meetings, we also had the opportunity to experience American culture and history as part of the "Freedom 250" celebrations, where the U.S. is celebrating 250 years of Independence. Cultural visits included the Smithsonian Museums, the U.S. National Archives (where I got to see the original Declaration of Independence up close), The Henry Ford Museum, and the Kennedy Space Center. Visiting the Kennedy Space Center was particularly exciting as it took place shortly before the Artemis II mission, giving me a unique opportunity to witness the anticipation surrounding the next chapter of human space exploration. Attending NBA basketball and ice hockey games also gave me the chance to witness firsthand the passion and energy that Americans have for sport, with the cultural diversity, atmosphere and fan engagement being a memorable part of the experience.
Overall, the IVLP was an unforgettable experience that strengthened both my professional knowledge and international network, while providing new ideas that can contribute positively to the ongoing work of the Malta Police Force.
