Our programme which focused on 'U.S. Foreign Policy - Global Challenges', started off in Washington DC, where we met think-thanks, NGOs, academics and also visited Government offices and departments, including the Pentagon and the State Department.
Over the course of three weeks, we then visited Cleveland, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; and Denver, Colorado, where we continued to have daily meetings with people from different backgrounds to have a better understanding of how foreign policy is affecting different sectors and parts of the country, and vice-versa. Intimate settings and off the record discussions helped me have a better grasp of U.S. Foreign Policy and how the U.S. Government functions, especially in a time where transatlantic relations are not what we have been accustomed to.
The U.S. is a country which we see a lot of on TV and in the news, however, this experience has also challenged my understanding of the country. Obtaining different perspectives, experiencing life and meeting people in these States was a very enriching experience. In my opinion this is also what makes this programme so unique - getting the opportunity to visit States which perhaps are considered less popular or familiar.
In addition, as a mixed group coming from 13 countries, having diverse personal and professional backgrounds, we had plenty of opportunities to learn from each other as well. Beyond professional insights, the journey encompassed moments of leisure and cultural exchange that allowed myself and my colleagues to create friendships. We got to experience different cuisines, nightlife, visit museums, galleries and also watch sporting events such as the NBA.
As I reflect on my IVLP journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and the friendships forged along the way. This was an experience which truly exceeded my expectations. It's a real privilege to be an IVLP alumni and I look forward to develop and build further connections and friendships.
