Italian music legend Peppino Di Capri dies at 87

Peppino Di Capri, the iconic Italian singer, pianist, and songwriter who defined an era of Italian music, has passed away at the age of 87 on his beloved island of Capri following a long illness, Italian media report.

Born Giuseppe Faiella in 1939, he became a national treasure by masterfully blending the Neapolitan melodic tradition with the modern energy of rock'n'roll and twist in the late 1950s.

Throughout a career spanning over six decades, Di Capri became the voice of Italy's economic boom. His timeless hits, most notably the legendary "Champagne," along with classics like "Roberta," "Nun è peccato," and "St. Tropez Twist," turned him into a household name and a cultural icon.

A sophisticated performer, he performed internationally, famously opening for the Beatles during their only Italian tour in 1965.

A two-time winner of the Sanremo Music Festival, he was a bridge between generations, maintaining relevance well into the 21st century through various collaborations. He leaves behind a profound musical legacy, remembered as a refined artist who brought elegance and charm to the Italian stage, forever etching his name into the country's artistic history.
