An electrical fire broke out at a construction site within the grounds of Malta International Airport on Friday evening, prompting the evacuation of the SkyParks building as a precaution, while airport operations continued unaffected.

The fire broke out at around 6.30pm at the SkyParks 2 construction site, a spokesperson at the Malta International Airport (MIA) said in a statement.

All personnel working at the construction site were evacuated and accounted for, with no injuries reported, the statement said.

The Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (RFFS), together with the Civil Protection Department and other first responders, immediately responded to the incident.

In a statement on Facebook, the Civil Protection Department said firefighters from Fire Stations 1, 4 and 8, together with members of the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, were dispatched to the scene to tackle the blaze. The fire was brought under control and no injuries were reported.

As a precaution while emergency crews worked to contain the fire, the SkyParks building was evacuated, MIA said.

The airport stressed that flight operations were not affected by the incident.

However, motorists travelling along the airport ring road were advised to follow the instructions of personnel on site, who were directing traffic to ensure the safe flow of vehicles, the statement said.

MIA thanked the public for its cooperation and understanding.
