A fire that broke out at what is believed to be an illegal dumping site in Marsa rapidly escalated within minutes, prompting a response from the Civil Protection Department (CPD) and renewed calls for stronger enforcement against illegal waste disposal.

According to a Facebook post by the Malta Ranger Unit, the blaze started at a site where waste had allegedly been dumped illegally. The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) was alerted, while Civil Protection officers arrived shortly afterwards to contain the fire.

The environmental NGO said the incident highlights the wider dangers posed by illegal dumping, arguing that such activities create not only an eyesore but also a significant fire risk, particularly during periods of high temperatures.

The Malta Ranger Unit urged the authorities to introduce tougher penalties for illegal dumping, including higher fines and the confiscation of vehicles used to dispose of waste unlawfully. The organisation argued that existing fines are insufficient to deter offenders, claiming that some individuals are willing to risk being caught because the cost of legal waste disposal outweighs the potential penalties.

The Malta Ranger Unit also appealed to the public to report any suspected illegal dumping activity immediately, either through the organisation's WhatsApp reporting service or directly to ERA's 24-hour enforcement line.

The group thanked Civil Protection officers for their efforts, noting that firefighters are currently dealing with an increased number of fire incidents across Malta.

The organisation also called on the Government to consider introducing temporary fire bans during periods of extreme heat, similar to measures adopted in several European countries. It argued that restricting activities that could ignite fires when temperatures exceed a certain threshold would help reduce the number of preventable incidents and allow Civil Protection resources to be used more effectively.
