Artificial intelligence has rapidly become one of the defining conversations of our age. Governments are debating how to regulate it. Businesses are investing unprecedented sums in its development. Universities and research centres are competing to push the boundaries of what these systems can achieve, while countries across the world increasingly see leadership in AI as a strategic economic These developments deserve the attention they are receiving.
Yet they also risk distracting us from a more fundamental question, one that ultimately matters far more than the technology itself. Are we preparing the next generation for an economy in which artificial intelligence will become part of everyday life, or are we still educating our young people for a world that is gradually disappearing? At its heart, artificial intelligence is a productivity technology.
The extraordinary levels of investment flowing into the sector, from across the Atlantic to the Far East, are driven by a common expectation that AI will fundamentally reshape the creation of created, the application of knowledge and the way work itself is organised. It is beyond dispute that governments, businesses and investors are already making decisions on the assumption that the transformation is underway. That conversation has particular relevance for Malta. Our economy has experienced sustained growth for many years, but it has also exposed persistent shortages within our labour market.
We have relied extensively on foreign workers to sustain that growth, and their contribution has been invaluable. Nevertheless, it cannot be the long-term tool for prosperity. At some stage, future growth will need to come from producing greater value with the people we already have. Productivity therefore becomes not merely an economic objective but an essential national priority. Artificial intelligence has the potential to become one of the principal drivers of that productivity.
It automates routine processes, improve decision making, accelerate research and allow workers across almost every profession to dedicate more of their time to tasks that genuinely require human judgement, creativity and expertise. The countries that benefit most from this transition will not necessarily be those that develop every new model or attract every major technology company. They will be those whose citizens possess the skills and confidence to work alongside these technologies, to question them intelligently and to use them responsibly.
This is why the conversation about artificial intelligence is, crucially, also a conversation about education. Our education system was designed for an economic model in which knowledge accumulated relatively slowly, careers remained comparatively stable and mastering information was a significant competitive advantage.
That model served previous generations well. The question we now face is whether it remains sufficient at a time when information has become instantly accessible and technological change is measured in months rather than decades and employers increasingly value adaptability as much as technical knowledge. This does not mean that knowledge has become less important.
On the contrary, strong foundations in mathematics, science, languages and critical thinking matter more than ever because they enable individuals to understand, evaluate and challenge what artificial intelligence produces. The danger lies in assuming that knowledge alone is enough. The skills that will increasingly define success are those that endure even as technology evolves. Digital literacy and more specifically, AI literacy will become as fundamental as much as reading and writing.
Financial literacy will become increasingly important in an economy shaped by constant innovation. In this context I cannot overstate the role of emotional intelligence, besides communication, ethical reasoning and the capacity to continue learning throughout one's life which will become essential attributes not simply desirable additions. More than fashionable concepts these are the practical capabilities that allow people to remain relevant in an economy characterised by continuous change.
This inevitably raises a larger question. Are we discussing incremental improvements to our education system when the moment demands something far more ambitious? Is this about refining curricula around the edges, or should we look at a transformation in what education itself is expected to achieve? These are not questions that should be answered lightly, nor should they become another ideological debate.
Education reform succeeds only when it is built with teachers rather than imposed upon them, and when parents, students, employers and policymakers recognise that they share responsibility for preparing the next generation. Equally, this is not an argument for discarding everything that has served us well. The strongest education systems are those that preserve rigorous academic foundations while continually adapting to the realities of the world beyond the classroom. Malta possesses an advantage that larger countries often lack.
Our size allows us to move more quickly, to test new ideas and to build consensus around meaningful reform. Rather than waiting to see which international model eventually proves most successful, we should have the confidence to shape an approach that reflects our own economic realities and our own ambitions for the future. The debate surrounding artificial intelligence is frequently presented as a discussion about technology. It is, in truth, a discussion about people.
It is about whether the next generation will possess the judgement and adaptability to thrive in an economy where knowledge will be amplified by machines rather than replaced by them. That is why this is not an AI debate which lies in a vacuum. It is an education debate as much as it is an economic debate. Above all, it is a debate about the kind of country Malta and a Europe, intends to become.
The future economy is no longer a distant prospect that policymakers can contemplate at leisure. It is already emerging around us. The decisions we take today about our classrooms, our curricula and the skills we choose to value will determine whether we merely adapt to that future or help shape it.
