San Giljan-Neptunes 13-10
San Ġiljan successfully retained the Knock-Out Cup after producing a commanding display to beat Neptunes 13-10 in an entertaining final.
It was the 17th time that San Giljan won this competition, the 10th time in the last 12 years.
Inspired by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Jake Tanti and clinical finishing in attack, the Saints gradually seized control after a closely contested opening quarter before pulling clear in the second and third sessions. Although Neptunes staged a late fightback after two brutality dismissals left San Ġiljan severely depleted, the Saints had already built an unassailable advantage and comfortably held on to lift the trophy.
The match started at a frenetic pace, with both teams defending aggressively and producing several fascinating individual battles. Neptunes struck first through Marko ?uvela on a double man-up situation, but Jake Muscat replied immediately with a powerful diagonal finish from San Ġiljan's first extra-man opportunity.
?uvela restored Neptunes' lead before Muscat again responded with another unstoppable effort to make it 2-2. Both goalkeepers then came into their own, with Tanti denying ?uvela while Matthew Castillo produced an excellent stop to keep out Jerko Marinic-Kragić.
Neptunes edged ahead again when Steve Camilleri converted a penalty after Muscat was adjudged to have fouled Mark Castillo. However, San Ġiljan levelled before the end of the opening quarter as former Neptunes player Alec Fenech found the net to make it 3-3.
San Ġiljan took control in the second session. Another former Neptunes player, Jeremy Abela, gave the Saints the lead for the first time with a well-worked man-up goal before Marinic-Kragić punished Neptunes' wastefulness to extend the advantage to 5-3.
The momentum had firmly swung in San Ġiljan's favour as Neptunes continued to struggle with their extra-man opportunities, while Tanti provided reassurance with several important saves.
The Saints tightened their grip after the break. Matthew Zammit finished off a well-worked move before ?uvela briefly reduced the deficit with a powerful effort that squeezed over the line.
Any hopes of a Neptunes comeback were quickly extinguished as Tanti denied Steve Camilleri once again before Nikolai Zammit and Jake Bonavia both scored to open up a commanding 10-5 lead.
Neptunes coach Aleksandar Ćirić called a timeout in an effort to halt San Ġiljan's momentum, but the Saints continued to dominate. Jordan Camilleri was denied by Tanti, while Muscat narrowly missed another chance on the counterattack and Matthew Zammit was unlucky to see his effort rebound off the underside of the crossbar.
Mark Castillo reduced the deficit, but Marinic-Kragić immediately restored San Ġiljan's five-goal cushion with a powerful finish to make it 11-6. Tanti continued his outstanding display by denying Sam Gialanze before Muscat added San Ġiljan's 12th following excellent build-up play from Nikolai Zammit. Ivan Nagaev replied for Neptunes to keep faint hopes alive.
The closing stages brought late drama. Following a VAR review, Jake Bonavia was sent off for brutality, with Neptunes awarded a penalty and San Ġiljan forced to play a man short for four minutes. Tanti once again proved decisive, saving Steve Camilleri's penalty with the help of the crossbar.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, San Ġiljan extended their lead when Ben Plumpton surprised Castillo with a powerful long-range effort.
Moments later Muscat was also dismissed for brutality, reducing the Saints to just four outfield players. ?uvela converted the resulting penalty before Julian Valletta made it 13-9.
Nagaev completed his hat-trick late on, but Neptunes' rally came too late as San Ġiljan comfortably closed out the contest to secure a fully deserved victory and retain the Knock-Out Cup.
