Swieqi Mayor Noel Muscat has called on Prime Minister Robert Abela to take immediate and decisive action over what he described as an ongoing garbage crisis in the locality.

In a letter addressed to Abela, Muscat raised concerns about the management of waste generated by a large apartment block located along Triq il-Qantar and Triq S. Cannataci.Muscat claimed that the owners or administrators of the block were "not capable or even willing" to manage the waste produced by the apartments in a "decent and lawful manner".

He said the situation was having a serious impact on residents and the wider locality, accusing those responsible for failing to consider the wellbeing of residents, guests and the environment."Please CLOSE them and other defaulters down immediately. Enough is enough," Muscat wrote, stressing that residents had been raising concerns about the issue for a prolonged period.

The mayor said frustration among residents had reached a point where stronger action was required, adding that the community's disappointment at the lack of "concrete and determined action" had continued to grow.Muscat also criticised what he described as an excessive focus on tourism records and revenues when residents were struggling with deteriorating conditions."

To hell with tourism records and revenues," he wrote, arguing that residents had a right to live in a clean and peaceful environment.He said the local council had already proposed solutions to address the problem, but claimed these had repeatedly been ignored."We demand serious and determined action," Muscat told the Prime Minister.

The mayor concluded by expressing hope that the situation would be addressed and that residents would not be faced with the same problem the following week.

The appeal comes amid continued concerns over waste management and refuse collection in several Maltese localities, with local councils and residents repeatedly calling for stronger enforcement against those who fail to comply with waste management rules.
