The Gozo Channel has reported a significant increase in ferry traffic during the eight-day Santa Marija period, operating 814 ferry trips while carrying nearly 150,000 passengers and transporting close to 54,000 vehicles between Malta and Gozo.

The figures highlight one of the busiest periods of the year for the ferry operator, as thousands of people travelled to and from Gozo to celebrate the Feast of Santa Marija, attend events, visit family and enjoy the summer holidays.

According to a post on the Gozo Channel's Facebook page, the ferry service averaged 18,533 passengers, 6,703 vehicles and 102 ferry trips each day over the eight-day period.

Santa Marija is traditionally among the busiest times of the year for travel to Gozo, with the island hosting major religious celebrations, cultural activities and an influx of local and foreign visitors.
