Rock collapse at Mellieħa's Aħrax area prompts safety warnings from mayor

Friday, 21 August 2026, 19:33 Last update: about 49 minutes ago

A rock formation has collapsed along the coast of the Aħrax area near Għadira, prompting Mellieħa Mayor Gabriel Micallef to issue an urgent safety warning to the public, though no injuries have been reported.

In a social media announcement, Micallef stressed that nature's unpredictability makes cliffs and unstable rock formations a serious hazard.

Following the collapse, he said he immediately alerted the Police, the Civil Protection Department, Public Works, and the Lands Authority to request professional site inspections, stability assessments, and preventative measures such as warning signs, barriers, or temporary access restrictions.

Authorities have urged residents and visitors to steer clear of the affected zone by both land and sea until experts can declare it safe. Micallef also expressed gratitude to those who quickly reported the hazard and encouraged the public to stay vigilant and notify officials immediately if they spot similar risks.
