A new Maltese play exploring friendship, love and the ways people confront mortality will have its world premiere in September.
Min Jidħak l-Aħħar, written by André Mangion and directed by Chiara Hyzler, will be staged by Nikolai Azzopardi Productions at Theatre Next Door between September 18 and 27.
The play centres on Renata, Iris and Helena, three women whose lives unexpectedly intersect while undergoing treatment for cancer. Their illnesses - glioblastoma, lung cancer and bowel cancer - force them to confront the reality that their time is running out.
What initially brings the three strangers together gradually develops into an unlikely friendship. As they share their fears, frustrations and hopes, they also find ways to laugh despite the circumstances they face.
The play examines the different ways people respond when confronted with their own mortality. While the road towards death brings the women together, their individual attitudes towards it create tension, conflict, friendship and love.
At one point, a conversation about which of them might die first takes an unexpected turn, leading the women to make a promise to keep laughing for as long as they can.
The premise also provides the play with its title and central question: when people cannot control how much time they have left, how do they choose to spend it?
Mangion said he began writing the play because he was interested in "that strange space between knowing that life will end and still having to carry on living it".
"The play asks what happens when we are forced to confront the fact that our time is limited, and whether knowing the end is coming can change the way we choose to live," he said.
"At its heart, it is a story about friendship, love, fear, hope, and finding reasons to laugh, even in the face of death."
Producer Nikolai Azzopardi described the production as one of the strongest scripts he had read, saying he felt fortunate to have a team capable of bringing the story to life.
He said seeing the cast and director discover the "humour, warmth and humanity" in Mangion's writing had been particularly rewarding.
The production, which has been more than two years in the planning, features Antonella Mifsud, Chantelle Micallef Grimaud, Marceline Galea, Moira Vassallo and Ilaria Costa.
Performances will take place on September 18 and 19 at 8pm, September 20 at 7pm, September 25 and 26 at 8pm, and September 27 at 7pm, at Theatre Next Door.
The production is supported by Arts Council Malta, with support from APS Bank, Bacchus and Polidano Press Ltd.
The play presents death not simply as an ending, but as a force that makes its characters reconsider how they want to live - and whether laughter can remain possible even when time is running out.
