Vassallo Group celebrated its 80th anniversary with a gala dinner at Villa Bighi, Kalkara, on 11 September. Around 300 guests attended, including guest of honour Prime Minister Robert Abela, as well as shareholders, directors, management, bankers, partners and stakeholders. At the entrance, an exhibition timeline took guests through the Group's 80 years, from its humble beginnings to the present day.
In his address, Prime Minister Dr Robert Abela praised the Group's steady growth and the trust it has earned over the decades. With more than 2,100 employees, he said, Vassallo Group clearly shows the strength and resilience of Maltese enterprise. He added that companies like Vassallo Group show the confidence and ambition needed to keep investing, expanding and succeeding, and that they play a key part in Malta's economic progress.
Group CEO Pio Vassallo opened the formal proceedings with a tribute to his grandfather, Piju Vassallo, and the values on which the company was founded. He looked back on the early years, when the Group was built by seeing opportunity at a time when Malta needed to rebuild. Mr Vassallo thanked Malta for the opportunities it has given the Group, which have allowed it to employ so many families, serve the common good and make a positive impact on society. He noted that the business is now in its third generation, and that plans for the next generation are already underway. He said he has full confidence in that generation, adding that the best chapters of the Vassallo Group are yet to be written. Guests then watched a short anniversary documentary on the key milestones in the Group's development.
After the documentary, Chairperson Natalie Briffa Farrugia spoke about the role of values, responsibility and service in the Group's growth. "Institutions do not endure for eight decades by chance; they endure because their values remain constant, even as the world changes around them," she said. She pointed to the Group's work across care, education, property, hospitality, energy and community development, adding that "the past 80 years give us every reason to be proud, and the future gives us every reason to be inspired."
The evening ended with a gala dinner, as guests celebrated the Group's legacy and its ongoing commitment to Malta's economy and communities.
