Special Intervention Unit officer Johann Vella, who was critically injured during a shooting in St Julian's earlier this year, has been awarded Ġieħ il-Mosta in recognition of his bravery and dedication to duty.
The honour was presented during Jum il-Mosta, held annually on 16 September, and recognises residents who have made exceptional contributions to their community or demonstrated outstanding commitment through their work.
Vella was shot in the face and neck in Birkirkara Hill, St Julian's, in July while responding to reports of a fire involving material beneath workers operating a crane basket at a nearby construction site. He and fellow officer Omar Sharif had been dispatched to the scene when the situation escalated into an armed confrontation.
Vella suffered life-threatening injuries and spent several weeks receiving treatment, including time in the Intensive Therapy Unit at Mater Dei Hospital. He was eventually discharged and has continued his recovery at home.
Speaking after his recovery, Vella said he was "fighting and getting better" every day. He also expressed his gratitude to the police officers who assisted him at the scene and the medical staff who treated him.
Ġieħ il-Mosta was also awarded this year to former Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia and educator George Borg, in recognition of their longstanding contributions to public service and education.
Additional recognition was given to Mario Calleja, Giovann Muscat and Marieanne Calleja Barbara for their respective contributions to the community.
