A wide range of sporting activities brought together people of all ages at the Kirkop Sports Complex on Saturday evening, the Ministry for Education and Sport said in a statement.

Malta's national flagship event for this year's European Week of Sport attracted children, youth, adults, and the elderly for an evening of sport, physical activity, and entertainment. This event, organised by SportMalta, gave people the opportunity to try out a wide variety of sporting disciplines.

Members of the public were able to participate in athletics, basketball, frame football, gymnastics, golf, bocce, softball, badminton, tennis, pickleball, kickboxing, handball, water polo, judo, karate, taekwondo and line dancing.

Other activities were made available later on during the #BeActive Night, including weightlifting, abseiling, rowing, rugby, skateboarding, table tennis, and Hyrox. Meanwhile, presentations were given to students who participated in the "Let's Move Malta" summer programme.

The Minister for Education and Sport, Byron Camilleri, was in attendance. He said that the variety of disciplines during this event and the participation of people of all ages underscored the message being shared throughout the European Week of Sport - that everyone can find their way to be more active.

Minister Camilleri spoke about sport's ability to unite people, help people keep active, and foster friendship, communities, and a sense of belonging, beyond competitions and results.

He stressed that "We must continue creating more opportunities so that everyone, regardless of their age or ability, finds their own way to be active and makes physical activity a natural part of their daily lives."

"Being active is a direct investment in our health and in the quality of our lives, both physically and mentally," Minister Camilleri said.

Among the people present were people who rekindled disciplines they had previously practised as well as senior citizens who were staying active while meeting and socialising with others.

This event garnered a strong turnout for the Hyrox event, the Ministry said. For this event, the format was adapted over half the typical distance to make it more inviting for people to try out. This competition featured a category for children between the ages of 7 and 15, and another for people aged 16 and over. More than 70 adults and 60 children took part, the Ministry said.

This year's campaign - through the theme "#BeActive Your Way" - conveys the message that there is no single way to be active. The aim is for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to find an activity that encourages them to move more and make physical activity a more regular part of their lives.

The European Week of Sport is taking place between 23-30 September. This is this campaign's eleventh year of running, since it was launched 2015. It has since reached over 118 million participants through more than 433,000 activities organised across 42 countries.

Several local councils and sports associations are participating in this year's European Week of Sport campaign, the Ministry said.

This year's European Week of Sport ambassadors for Malta are swimmer Sasha Gatt and judoka Katryna Esposito.
