The Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) and the University of Malta signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will strengthen collaboration between the two institutions across several areas, including research, policy development, training, innovation and the promotion of social dialogue.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti, together with Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri.
The two institutions agreed to collaborate in areas including the use of University of Malta facilities, particularly the Valletta Campus; research and consultancy services; University participation in MCESD meetings; an annual strategic dialogue on research; access to research and knowledge dissemination; training and capacity building; and student engagement and knowledge exchange.
From a social dialogue perspective, Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti said that the signing represents another step towards strengthening social dialogue through greater knowledge and evidence, adding that, "We want discussions within the MCESD to continue to be informed by high-quality research and analysis that helps us better understand the challenges and opportunities facing our country." He also added that through this agreement, a strong bridge is being created between academia and the social partners.
Minister Byron Camilleri said: "This agreement will continue to bring the University of Malta closer to the realities and challenges facing our country, so that the knowledge and research generated within the University can translate into a concrete contribution to society and to policy development. At the same time, we are creating more opportunities for students to go beyond the classroom, gain practical experience and apply what they learn through placements, internships and research projects. We want to continue strengthening this link between education, research and the needs of our country."
The Rector of the University of Malta, Prof. Frank Bezzina stated that, "For the University of Malta, this partnership with the MCESD is an opportunity to place our knowledge at the service of the wider community. As the national university, we have an important role to play by contributing to the national dialogue on issues of economic and social importance. Through closer collaboration with the MCESD and its partners, we can bring evidence and academic expertise into discussions, helping to shape informed policymaking and constructive national dialogue."
The agreement between the two institutions also includes opportunities for various seminars and workshops, collaboration on student placements, internships, and academic projects related to social dialogue, among other initiatives aimed at strengthening the work of both the MCESD and the University of Malta.
This Memorandum of Understanding will remain valid for a period of three years.
