Sixth edition of the Animal Honours Awards celebrates dedication to animal welfare

The Parliamentary Secretariat for Animal Rights hosted the sixth edition of the Animal Honours Awards, marking the culmination of the Malta Animal Awareness Week. This annual initiative celebrates individuals, professionals, organizations, and animals that have made a significant contribution to animal protection, welfare, and rights across the country.

The event featured five distinct categories, highlighting the continuous efforts of those who work year-round to ensure animals are treated with respect, care, and responsibility. Public nominations played a central role, allowing the community to recognize local champions who make a tangible difference in the lives of animals.

Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said praised the nominees and winners for their unwavering commitment. She emphasized that the awards provide a vital platform to thank those who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to animal welfare, reflecting a broader societal shift toward compassion and accountability.

Commissioner for Animal Welfare Elliot Magro underscored the importance of keeping animal welfare at the forefront of the public agenda, noting that celebrating positive examples fosters a necessary cultural change in how animals are treated. Directorate Director Dennis Sciberras also highlighted the inspiring stories behind every nomination, stressing that recognizing dedication helps drive higher standards of care and encourages wider community participation.

The winners of this year's awards categories include:

  • Sanctuary Excellence Award: MSPCA

  • Volunteer of the Year Award: Maria Attard

  • Second Chance Companion Award: Fonzu

  • Pet-Friendly Business Award: Gian Paul Bongailas - Rabbit Groomer

  • People's Choice Award for Contribution to the Animal Welfare Sector: Gian Paul Bongailas

Additionally, three special awards were presented during the ceremony to Romina Frendo, Alison Bezzina, and James Ryder in recognition of their exceptional contributions to animal welfare.
