Din l-Art Ħelwa (DLĦ) celebrated a momentous achievement: the receipt of the prestigious Heritage Champions Grand Prix from Europa Nostra. The celebratory ceremony was held at Verdala Castle under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta and Patron of DLĦ.
The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including the Hon. Minister Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, the Hon. Minister Owen Bonnici, Professor Paolo Vitti representing Europa Nostra, council members, dedicated volunteers, sponsors, and friends of the organisation.
The evening commenced with an address by Patrick Calleja, Executive President of DLĦ, who paid tribute to the generations of volunteers whose tireless and selfless efforts over six decades have saved over 60 properties and works of art. "This award belongs to all of us here, the volunteers, past and present and all the members, donors and sponsors without whose help nothing would have been achieved," Mr Calleja stated. He highlighted DLĦ's journey since its founding in 1965 by the late Judge Maurice Caruana Curran, its role in pioneering the concept of guardianship by NGOs and its ongoing commitment to protecting Malta's cultural and natural heritage.
Professor Paolo Vitti, Board Member of Europa Nostra, delivered a poignant speech, noting the deep, intertwined history between the two organisations. "Din l-Art Ħelwa has been an integral part of the Europa Nostra network since 1967," he remarked. "This Grand Prix is not an award for a single project... It is a recognition of sixty years of long-term, unwavering commitment." He read from the Board's citation, which praised DLĦ as "a European and international reference for sensitive resilience and responsible stewardship in the field of heritage."
In her address, Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono commended the organisation's work, highlighting its role in fostering a culture that values historical heritage and strengthening civic awareness, particularly among younger generations regarding their responsibility towards the future.
A highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a commemorative bronze plaque to mark the occasion.
