The Joy Gospel Singers will be giving a concert at the Collegiate Church of St Lawrence on Saturday, 10th October, on the occasion of BirguFest 2026. The concert starts at 8:30pm.
They will be presenting a variety of Gospel songs, ranging from traditional and negro spirituals going to praise, including some recent additions to their repertoire, like their Gospel interpretation of "Bridge over Troubled Waters", a song they shaped during a vocal coaching session at the MPAA (Momentum Professional Arts Academy) in London.
The 50 members strong mixed choir of sopranos, altos and tenors will be under the musical direction of Michelle Marie Abela, who with her husband Dr Carmel Abela, founded the choir. Dr Abela is the technical and sound director.
Joy Gospel Singers are well established in the local cultural scene. Founded in 2002 in the parish of Santa Lucija, over the years the choir has participated in numerous concerts, cultural events and fund-raising initiatives. In 2012, on the occasion of their tenth anniversary, the Joy Gospel Singers were awarded the 'Gieħ Santa Luċija' by the Santa Luċija Local Council for services rendered to the locality.
Through the professional musical arrangements of the director, the choir has developed a vibrant and uplifting style, with rehearsed choreography and clear vocal expression that is very appealing to the audience. The Singers enhance their musical rendering by expressive body movements and solo pieces. Live music is produced by a small band of musicians that adds to the lively performances of the choir.
The Joy Gospel Singers meet regularly for rehearsals and social interaction. Their commitments include concerts, singing at weddings, participation in liturgical celebrations and in other social functions. One can find more information and listen to musical clips of the choir at www.joygospel.com or on their Facebook page @JoyGospel. Joy Gospel Singers is today one of the leading Gospel music choirs in Malta.
Entrance to the concerts is free.
