Diplomatic missions in Malta associated with the Media Freedom Coalition marked the ninth anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia's assassination by paying tribute to her memory and calling on the Maltese government to fully adopt the findings of the public inquiry into her death.
In a collective statement released Friday, the coalition urged Malta to actively pursue the "full and effective implementation" of these recommendations, emphasizing the need for robust institutional protection so that journalists can perform their duties safely and without interference.
"We reaffirm our shared commitment to media freedom, journalist safety, accountability and the rule of law. We encourage Malta to continue its progress towards the full and effective implementation of the recommendations of the Public Inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, helping to ensure that journalists in Malta can work freely and safely, supported by appropriate institutional safeguards," a statement said Friday.
"As Malta's friends and partners, we stand ready to support these efforts and to share relevant experience and expertise, including on journalist safety, media freedom and institutional accountability, so that the lessons of Daphne's assassination may serve as an opportunity to strengthen institutions and promote lasting progress
"We stand with Daphne's family, Malta's journalists and all those working to uphold these fundamental democratic values."
