Rule of law experts who spoke at the protest march commemorating the ninth anniversary of the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia have urged Malta to overhaul the whistleblower legislation and introduce anti-mafia laws, aiming to fight corruption.
In separate interviews given to The Malta Independent on Sunday, Italian political scientist and co-president of the anti-mafia organisation Libera, Francesca Rispoli, and the Executive Director of the Whistleblowing International Network, Anna Myers, both emphasised the need for Malta to bridge legislative gaps.
Rispoli said that political leaders should recognise the different forms criminal organisations can take, rather than associating the mafia exclusively with violence, clans and territorial control.
Myers said that when it comes to whistleblowers, one needs the legal systems to work so that people do not have to put their lives at risk. "You'd think money is all that matters, but information is the power that they fear," she said.
