Matchday 8 of the VBET Malta Premier delivered an entertaining weekend of football, featuring a dramatic late winner, convincing victories and a six-goal thriller. Valletta strengthened their position at the top with a 2-1 victory over Sliema Wanderers, while Marsaxlokk maintained the pressure on the leaders with a 2-0 win against Birkirkara. Floriana and Mosta shared six goals in an exciting draw, as the battle for points continued across the league.
Valletta produced the most dramatic moment of the round at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, defeating Sliema Wanderers 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Yannick Yankam. With the match seemingly heading towards a draw, Yankam struck late to secure all three points for the Citizens. The victory underlined Valletta's determination and ability to deliver under pressure. For Sliema, the late goal was a bitter disappointment after they had appeared close to earning a valuable point.
Marsaxlokk also enjoyed a successful outing, overcoming Birkirkara 2-0. The Southseasiders demonstrated their effectiveness in front of goal, scoring twice in the second half to claim a convincing victory. The result kept them firmly in contention near the top of the standings and ensured that Valletta could not afford to relax. Birkirkara, meanwhile, were left looking for a response after another difficult result.
One of the weekend's most entertaining encounters saw Floriana and Mosta play out a thrilling 3-3 draw. Both teams contributed to an open contest in which attacking play took centre stage. Although Floriana demonstrated their offensive quality by scoring three times, they were unable to secure maximum points. Mosta deserve credit for remaining competitive and taking a point from a challenging fixture. The draw nevertheless represented a missed opportunity for Floriana to close the gap on the league leaders.
Elsewhere, Żabbar St Patrick secured an important 2-1 away victory against Balzan. The result provided a valuable boost for Żabbar, who will hope to build momentum in the coming weeks. Balzan, on the other hand, were left disappointed after failing to turn home advantage into points.
Gżira United and Ħamrun Spartans shared four goals in a 2-2 draw. Both sides found the net twice, but neither could produce the decisive moment needed to claim victory. For Ħamrun, the result meant an opportunity to move closer to the leading clubs was missed. Gżira will take encouragement from their ability to compete, although consistency remains important as the campaign progresses.
Hibernians completed the round with a narrow 1-0 victory over Birżebbuġa St Peter's. In a match where a single goal proved decisive, Hibernians collected three important points and strengthened their position. Birżebbuġa, meanwhile, were left frustrated after failing to find an equaliser.
Overall, Matchday 8 highlighted the competitive nature of the Malta Premier. With more fixtures approaching, maintaining consistency, converting chances and defending effectively will be crucial for every side hoping to achieve its objectives this season.
'The players showed great character'
- Matthew Psaila, Assistant Coach Valletta FC
'We knew that this was going to be a very tough match.' These were the first comments passed on by Matthew Psaila, Valletta's assistant coach. He added. 'Sliema are a very good team and they proved it on Saturday playing for long stretches with ten players and being able to draw level. It was a game of a lot of episodes. Sending offs and also the dramatic winner. But I must compliment the players who once again showed character and we achieved another three valuable points.'
'Football is sometimes cruel' '
- Branco Nisevic, coach Sliema W. FC
'The match was conditioned by Steve Pisani's red card. But on the whole it was an even match.' Sliema's coach first reaction after his side lost to Valletta in the dying minutes. Nisevic continued, 'I must me more than proud for the reaction that my players showed. They played their hearts out. It's a pity that we left the pitch empty handed. But football is sometimes cruel. After all the effort we conceeded a goal in stoppage time from a set piece
CURIOSITIES
v Valletta's win over Sliema W. was a first for Thane Micallef against Sliema as coach of the Citizens. There was also a first for Yanick Yankam who was playing his first minutes for Valletta this season and also scored the dramatic winner.
v Mosta gained another valuable point when they scored twice late in the game against Floriana. A notable note worth mentioning is that Mosta had eight Maltese players in their line up in the second half. Remarkable and this suggests a bright future.
v Birzebbuga are yet to keep a clean sheet this season. And they only managed to find the net in 25% of their MPL matches that is two out of eight.
