The government said Wednesday Malta continued to make significant progress in its transition towards cleaner energy, with renewable energy sources accounting for 18.8% of the country's energy consumption in 2025, according to the latest provisional Eurostat data.

The latest figures represent an increase of 1.6 percentage points compared to 2024, when Malta's renewable energy share stood at 17.2%. This continued upward trend highlights the sustained progress achieved in expanding the use of renewable energy across the country.

Since 2012, Malta has recorded a substantial increase in its renewable energy share, rising from less than 3% to 18.8% in 2025, representing a more than sixfold increase over this period, the government said.

Minister for the Environment and Energy Miriam Dalli welcomed the latest figures, highlighting the importance of sustained investment in renewable energy and the contribution of Maltese households and businesses towards achieving the country's energy objectives.

"From less than 3% in 2012 to almost 19% today, Malta has made significant strides in its transition towards renewable energy. These numbers represent more families generating their own clean electricity, more businesses investing in sustainable technologies, and a country that is gradually becoming less dependent on fossil fuels. Our commitment is to ensure that the energy transition delivers tangible benefits for people. That means making renewable energy more accessible and affordable, helping families and businesses reduce their energy costs, and strengthening our country's energy security," Minister Dalli stated.

At 18.8%, Malta now ranks ahead of several EU Member States, including Belgium (14.9%), Slovakia (16.3%) and Ireland (17.2%). These provisional figures highlight Malta's continued progress in increasing its renewable energy share, despite the geographical and size constraints faced by the country.

The latest results also represent another important step towards Malta's national objective of achieving a 25% renewable energy share by 2030. With renewable energy now accounting for almost one-fifth of the country's energy consumption, Malta continues to make progress towards this ambitious target.

This sustained growth reflects the Government's ongoing commitment to promoting renewable energy through targeted financial incentives, support schemes and investments aimed at accelerating the country's energy transition, the government said. These initiatives have encouraged households, businesses and industries to adopt renewable energy technologies, contributing to a more sustainable and diversified energy mix.
