Matchday 10 of the VBET Malta Premier provided an eventful weekend, with important victories, unexpected results and further twists in the race for the top positions. The biggest talking point was undoubtedly Ħamrun Spartans victory over league leaders Valletta, while Sliema Wanderers strengthened their position among the leading contenders whereas Żabbar St Patrick registered a notable win against Floriana.
Ħamrun Spartans produced an impressive performance to overcome Valletta in an entertaining and high tempo match. Lucas Villela proved decisive, scoring twice in the first half to give the Spartans a comfortable advantage. Valletta responded through Emmanuel Mbende's header early in the second half, but despite their efforts to find an equaliser, the Citizens were unable to salvage a point. The victory represented a significant boost for Ħamrun, who returned to winning ways after three consecutive draws. Valletta, meanwhile, remained at the top of the standings on 22 points.
Sliema Wanderers also enjoyed a successful weekend, claiming a valuable 2-1 victory over Marsaxlokk. The result strengthened Sliema's position among the leading teams, while Marsaxlokk missed an opportunity to put additional pressure on the leaders.
Birkirkara likewise collected three important points after securing a 2-0 win against Balzan, keeping the Stripes firmly in contention for a place among the leading six teams.
One of MD 10 biggest surprises came at the expense of Floriana, who suffered a 2-1 defeat against Żabbar St Patrick. The Greens were unable to hold firm as Żabbar secured a valuable victory in their efforts to improve their league position. For Floriana, the result represented a missed opportunity to close the gap on the teams above them, underlining the importance of consistency as the competition progresses.
There was also plenty of drama in the remaining fixtures. Gżira United and Birżebbuġa St Peter's shared four goals in an entertaining 2-2 draw. Saldanha opened the scoring for Gżira before Gabriel Costa converted two penalties for Birżebbuġa, while Gabriel Mentz also scored from the penalty spot for Gżira. Mosta and Hibernians also had to settle for a point each following another 2-2 draw.
Overall, the latest round demonstrated the competitive nature of the VBET Malta Premier, with several clubs still firmly in the running for the leading positions. Valletta remain the team to catch, but Ħamrun's victory and Sliema's continued progress suggest that the battle at the top is far from settled. With the race for the top six intensifying, the coming fixtures promise further excitement and potentially decisive developments.
'A game of two halves'
- Thane Micallef, Coach Valletta FC
'During the first half Hamrun held the upper hand though we had to clear chances which could have easily ended at the back of the net'. These were the first comments given by Thane Micallef following defeat against Hamrun. The Valletta coach continued. 'In the second half we managed to take control of the match, creating a number of chances but not taking them. The reaction from the players is a positive thing and this bodes well for future matches.'
'This attitude wins you matches' '
- Marco Amelia, coach Hamrun S. FC
'It is a great win but we have to keep working with this attitude, cause with this attitude you win matches'. First reaction from Marco Amelia after his side's victory over rivals Valletta. The Hamrun Spartans coach added. 'The boys know about the difficulties that we encountered, but there is great work and there are decisions that at times have to be made but always for the best of the squad. We are happy with this win, we are better placed now in the table and lets enjoy it before looking into our next match which is another difficult one against Sliema Wanderers'
CURIOSITIES
v After taking a two goal lead against Valletta, Ħamrun Spartans suffered an early second half goal. This was the ninth time from ten that they conceded in an MPL match this season. In fact to date the Spartans only kept one clean sheet.
v Lucas Villela is only the second player that has scored two goals in the same half against Valletta's goalkeeper Maringa. The other player was Jose Ulises Arias for M'Xlokk, the other only defeat that Valletta have so far suffered.
v This was the first time that Marsaxlokk lost two consecutive matches this season. In fact under Enzo Potenza, who last Saturday's match was the 71st in charge of the Seasiders, this only happened on another two occasions.
