Cottonera Marina nearing completion

Malta Independent Friday, 15 October 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The developers had already submitted an application for the construction of a similar system, opposite the marina. It was proposed that fuel and waste oil ducts would run across the harbour seabed onto the other side. However this idea was rejected and the developers were asked to make other arrangements.

The new proposal is to have bulk fuel and oil storage systems within the arches at the rear of Oil Wharf. Storage will be in one of the arches supporting a road leading from Couvre Porte down to Vittoriosa Wharf that was built in the late 1970s.

The pipeline crosses the waterfront at this point and follows the existing marina services and trench works towards the superyacht berths. The fuel will be pumped from the reservoirs to the yachts through underground pipelines. At the same time, the yachts will be able to dispose of waste oil that will be pumped from the boats to the storage tanks.

A pumping station will also be constructed on pontoon pier G, which will be located near the bridge that crosses over to St Angelo Wharf. There will also be a special facility for superyachts of over 50 metres.

The crossover pipeline from Vittoriosa wharf to St Angelo wharf will go through a steel structure along the inside of the bridge. The developer agreed to replace the unsightly pipe work that is presently used to hold electric cables and sewer pipes and these will now be incorporated in the new metal structure.

The storage facility will have two diesel tanks with a combined capacity of 220,000 litres, a petrol tank of 20,000 litres and a waste oil tank of 40,000 litres. The safety of the storage facility was debated at length. The developers will now have to acquire the necessary permits and fire safety certification from authorities such as the Malta Resources Authority and the Civil Protection Department, in view of the fact that the fuel storage will be only some 100 metres from a residential area.
