MFA And clubs to meet next week over league re-structuring

Malta Independent Thursday, 6 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The MFA officials and club representatives of the Premier and first divisions – presidents, secretaries and council members – are expected to meet next week to further discuss the re-structuring of the local leagues, especially the Premier League and the First Division.

It is known that a proposal to have the Premier League with eight teams has now been generally accepted, but there is still no agreement in sight over the format of the competition.

Some are saying that there should be a league with three rounds with just one team being relegated.

While some seem to be in favour of having this league straight over the three rounds, others want a first and second phase with a division of the points after the first round.

Others are also proposing that a second team (the 7th placed) is to get involved in play-offs with the second and third placed of the first division to determine the second team to be relegated.

Another proposal is to have an eight-team league with four rounds. These are also harbouring the view that such a league would be played on the present format, that is, in two phases, with the points being deducted by half at the end of the first phase.
