St George’s 0

Mqabba 3

St George’s missed two penalties in the first 20 minutes of the match, and paid dearly for their mistakes from the penalty spot, as Mqabba scored three times in the last 15 minutes of the match.

The score is very harsh on St George’s as they surely played one of their best matches so far this season.

But the leaders improved a lot in the second half especially after the inclusion of Marlon Briffa who was instrumental in all the three goals scored.

The first half was very exciting with St George’s producing some very good football in the process. Mqabba were always on the defensive, with the Saints missing two glaring scoring chances both from the penalty spot.

On 12 minutes St George’s had their first penalty when Edric Borg handled the ball inside the area, but form the resultant penalty Kris Calleja saved brilliantly Darmanin’s low angled shot.

Mqabba had a good chance through Hili whose shot slightly missed the upright. But St George’s showed the better ideas always first on the ball and Ewurun was brought down in the penalty area by Gatt, and referee Casha awarded the Saints a second penalty.

This time it was Heathcliff Schembri who took the shot but yet again Kris Calleja managed to block his central shot.

Mqabba had a neat move mid way through but Busttil’s header was saved by goalkeeper Gatt.

The second half was more balanced even though St George’s missed another two golden opportunities in the opening stages with Degabriele and Thomas missing in front of goal. Mqabba had their chances as well but Anywanna was not at his best missing two good opportunities.

Wit 16 minutes to go Mqabba took the lead when Busuttil headed home a Marlon Briffa corner from the right.

Four minutes later Mqabba doubled the score when Marlon Briffa was brought down by Clive Brincat with referee Casha awarding the third penalty of the match. Mqabba did miss their chance as Anywanna scored with a hard drive.

Just before the final whistle Mqabba scored their third goal when Marlon Briffa again proved his worth crossing to Keith Mallia who scored easily from close range.
